In the past, Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes were offered in many schools worldwide. However, over the years as the education system and priorities began to shift, CTE programs began to slowly fade away. This change is detrimental to students from all over the world, as CTE classes are integral in preparing students for their futures.
CTE programs consist of classes that provide students pathways to different types of careers. Some of these programs and classes include agriculture, technology education, law and public safety, culinary arts, and health sciences. These type of programs teach students about real-world skills that prepare them for both the workforce and independent living. Many of these programs also lead students to apprenticeships, where they can train in the field to jumpstart a career.
As the world began to focus more on pushing students to attend college after high school, CTE classes began to fade out. The focus shifted to a more academic-driven environment, leading students to careers that required four-year college degrees. This caused the slow deterioration of attendance in CTE classes. Students began to enroll more in classes that would guarantee them a spot in college, and many saw CTE classes as classes as extra and not as beneficial.
With the increased focus on standardized tests, the push for academic success and an emphasis on English and math skills, CTE classes slowly disappeared. However, this has become a huge loss for a new generation of high school students who are contemplating their future and their career long-term.
The most important thing about CTE programs is that it gives students the opportunity to pursue a career that they enjoy without additional education and student debt. The concepts and skills the students learn can be seen as qualifications for apprenticeships and entry-level positions in the respective field, which can help them in their future career. By offering CTE courses, students can explore various opportunities to try new things out and potentially find what they love.
These programs can also benefit students who do not learn best from sitting at a table all day, taking tests, and reading textbooks. Some students learn better when they do hands-on and visual activities, which is something that CTE programs focus on primarily.
As well as helping students decide the career path they would like to follow, CTE classes also assist students in discovering what they like doing and what they are good at. For example, a student who is not good at standardized tests may be very good at cooking and culinary arts, which is a class that CTE programs usually offer.
Even though CTE classes are not as prominent as before, they are still very important because they introduce students to skills and opportunities that they need in the real world. These skills that they learn in CTE programs are needed in high-demand jobs such as construction and technology. As well, these programs help students learn and can also help students figure out what they are interested in before they graduate.
Most importantly, CTE classes can also help students gain more confidence in themselves for their future. If they did not do as well in school on standardized tests or other academic assignments, they will still graduate with the skills they learned from these classes to help them; no matter what career path they choose.
