As another school year ends and doors lock for the last time until September, many of the staff who have called Cardozo home for countless years are saying goodbye to the school that they have called home.
Retiring is an accomplishment unlike any other. It is the accumulation of years of hard work, dedication, and memories shared with colleagues and students. Looking back, many see retirement as bittersweet. But, it is a new chapter of life to celebrate all of that hard work that they have put in over the years.
This year, Cardozo is saying goodbye to many beloved administrators, teachers, and school staff that have touched countless lives within the community.
Yvette Bohlman, Assistant Principal of Organization

“Yvette Bohlman’s 22 years of dedicated service as Assistant Principal of Organization at Cardozo High School have left an indelible mark on our community. Before joining Cardozo, she spent nearly a decade at Forest Hills High School as a science teacher and Assistant Chair of Programming, bringing a wealth of experience to her role.
At Cardozo, Yvette has overseen everything from HR, budget, and facilities to technology and programming—her tireless work and always dependable nature resulted in her serving as the steady hand guiding the building on occasions of the Principal’s absence. With an extraordinary attention to detail, she has been the “wizard behind the curtain,” ensuring that every aspect of the school runs seamlessly, often without recognition.
Beyond her many responsibilities, she has fostered a sense of community through her leadership of the administrative Sunshine Fund, her training for new teachers and she has even brought joy to our daily routines as the DJ behind our bell music. Her unwavering commitment to supporting both staff and students has made her truly invaluable, and her presence will be deeply missed.”

Kim Salisbury, Art Teacher & COSA

“For the past 25 years, Miss Salisbury has been the creative heart of our Visual Arts Department. A gifted artist and dedicated educator, she has used her talents to bring beauty, joy, and imagination to every corner of our school community. Her contributions span decades of school wide initiatives from our fashion shows, talent shows, and early school wide SING competitions, to her leadership as COSA, where she elevated student activities to new heights.
Her annual Respect for All art installations became a cherished February tradition, and her extraordinary creativity earned her three consecutive first‑place wins in the citywide milk carton art contest, where she transformed everyday materials into magnificent large‑scale works of art.
As coordinator of student activities, she reimagined school celebrations with her signature artistic flair most memorably her Valentine’s Day hallway displays, our beloved Halloween festivities, and the now‑iconic Spring Tea Party, which she initiated and grew into one of our most anticipated events.
Miss Salisbury has shown generations of students that art can be created from anything, and beauty can be found everywhere. Her legacy is one of creativity, inspiration, and the belief that art has the power to uplift the spirit. We are deeply grateful for all she has given to our school community.”

“What can I say about Phil Ackerman? From the moment I met him, we connected. Whether we were talking about the Ramones, Iron Maiden, or anything in between, conversations with Phil were always genuine and full of energy.
One of my fondest memories was our attempt to reenact The Ten Commandments set to Metallica’s Creeping Death—a collaboration that perfectly captured Phil’s creativity, humor, and passion.
Beyond that, Phil was an exceptional educator. He dedicated countless hours of his own time to tutoring students, always going above and beyond to support their success.
