High school seniors are currently in the midst of their last senior events. Among activities like senior sunset and barbecue, there is senior prom.
Flower bars and DIY bouquet parties are trending again, so what better way to learn how to make your own hand held bouquet than now?
The most important thing is finding the correct assortment of colors. It’s vital that the bouquet matches your dress, but does not overpower it. Monochromatic colors are strongly recommended. This is because a more random arrangement of colors tends to give a “cheaper” look.
Once you’ve settled on your color scheme, determine where you will purchase your flowers. A nearby grocery store is recommended, for the most affordable price. Many opt to go to Trader Joe’s, a supermarket known for their flowers. In addition to having pre-made bouquets, the store offers bundles of different flower types for four to six dollars.
If you are organizing a flower bar or DIY bouquet party, get galvanized floral buckets to hold the flowers. This allows for easy access for everyone to select which flowers they would like. Also be sure to have various types of flowers, to better match everyone’s respective dresses.
When looking for your flowers, be specific in your choices.
- Three to four focal flowers(popular choices include roses, peonies, and lilies)
- Two to three types of filler flowers(popular choices include baby’s breath or lavender)
- Greenery(optional, but a few ferns can help fill the bouquet up)
After getting your flowers, don’t forget to prep the stems. If the flower stem is too long, cut it to your preferred length using sharp scissors or floral shears. Be sure to clear off any thorns or lower leaves, as well as any bruised petals.
As for putting together your bouquet, make sure your focal flowers are in the center of the arrangement. Layer the additional flowers around the focal flowers, angling your stems in the same direction to create a natural spiral. If there are any gaps in the arrangement, use the filler flowers to create texture.
When the bouquet looks balanced, secure it with a rubber band or hair tie just underneath the flower heads. Follow this with floral tape to further secure the flowers, locking them into place. Then wrap the flowers with a decorative ribbon of your choice. The color of your dress or white is recommended, to tie the arrangement together.
Lastly, trim the flower stems one last time to make sure they are even. This creates a clean, cohesive, and neat look for the flower bouquet.
If you have made your bouquet a few days before prom, make sure to store it carefully. Place your bouquet upright in a bouquet of water and leave it in the refrigerator. This will ensure that your flowers will be in perfect condition when you need them.
