The 2026 girls varsity basketball season has come to an end with a successful and promising run. With all the passion, determination, and perseverance the girls brought to the court, they ended the season with eight wins, as well as one playoff game.
Coach Pep, the girls basketball coach, shared that he sees the potential and talent in all of his players. He gave a special shoutout to Mylie Morris, a freshman on the team, who averaged 14 points per game and overall had a very good year for her first season on the team. Next Tayla Gutierrez, a junior and team leader, was also a standout player on the team. Finally, junior Hanna Wong made her fair share of shots on the court this season.
“It was very good because we improved the whole time,” Coach Pep said. “We got better everyday and we won more games than last year.” He believes the girls worked hard to get better, too, by practicing in school and on their own time.
Gutierrez, a team leader, looked back on the season happily. “I think the season went well…there were a lot of things we could’ve done better and teams we could’ve beat but it was definitely better than last year which I’m most happy about,” she said.
Gutierrez, who is a power forward, also reflected that the team struggled during some games due to poor communication on the court. She also shared that there were things she’d want to improve on, as well, but fears risking another injury during a game.
“I was proud because we only had one win last year and I told myself coming into this season that we needed to do better,” Gutierrez added. She felt that everyone on the team has definitely improved on their skills, including herself.
Wong also shared that she found that the girls definitely improved from their previous season. “I think our season compared to last year turned out much better, and we of course have Miley to thank for that,” she said. “Although we still have many things to work on, we definitely have progressed since last season.”
She explained that although the team did get better there are always challenges like finishing off the game strong when it counted the most and moving the ball more effectively and efficiently around the court. As a team, Wong believes that if they keep looking out for each other during hard moments, they will gain strength and motivation mentally and physically.
“I think small things like taking our time on court to see who is open, and completing our plays were definitely a few highlights as it was one of our struggles,” she said. “Bigger moments like victories against other teams where it came down to the wire, for example, John Adams, earlier in the season…can’t say it was our best game played, but we pulled through and secured the win, so that one especially felt pretty rewarding.”
Wong reflected that she didn’t see much self-improvement this season, but as a whole, the team learned to play together much better than before. “We as a whole have made many, many mistakes, but those mistakes carved the path to bring us to the playoffs,” she added.
Despite only playing in one game in the playoffs, the team sees this as a victory to make it that far overall. Although the team had its ups and downs, the players look back and feel pride in what they had accomplished together as a team.
