Varsity basketball coach Ron Naclerio has officially made New York State history by becoming the most winningest coach for high school basketball, with a total of 973 wins.
This honor is more than just a number for Naclerio; it is a symbol of hard work, dedication, and a legacy that will inspire athletes for generations to come. The win for Cardozo’s basketball team was with a final score of 69-46 against Julia Richman High School.
This record-breaking win has been 45 years in the making, as Naclerio began coaching the varsity basketball team in 1981. Prior to this, he was the assistant coach for six years. But, basketball wasn’t always on the top of his mind. In fact, Naclerio was actually a baseball player. He played baseball for St. John’s University and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox, about to make it big in the MLB, but unfortunately tore a ligament in his ankle.
“People who have known me since forever can’t believe how involved I am in basketball, and people who know me now can’t believe how involved I was in baseball,” he said. While this may seem like a setback, it was actually the start of a long, successful coaching career.
His love and participation with basketball actually came from the help of his dad, who was a doctor and a surgeon. After saving a secretary from Madison Square Garden’s life, he wanted to do something nice in return. The secretary ended up giving the position of being the New York Knicks’ ball boy to his son, Naclerio. The rest is now New York State history.
Along with being the most winningest high school basketball coach, Naclerio was also inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.
“To be put on a Mount Rushmore, where now you are on Mount Rushmore by yourself, is an amazing feeling,” he said, sharing how honored he was to be included and recognized.
As with many journeys to success, Naclerio had minor setbacks that impacted his coaching career as he headed towards breaking the state record. Earlier this year, Naclerio was suspended from coaching temporarily for recruiting players, according to an article from the New York Times. The accusations came close to the games leading up to his record-breaking win.
Reports indicate that Naclerio denied the charges, and planned to fight. After contention with Cardozo’s administration and having to sit out from coaching temporarily, he was able to get back on the court and reach the historic victory.
For decades, players have looked to Naclerio for much more than just coaching, but also for support, advice, guidance, and help. Cardozo has been a place where many legends have been born, with Queens natives looking back and remembering the basketball coach vividly for his demeanor on the court, his iconic polo shirts, and his love for the game.
As Naclerio continues to lead the Judges on the basketball court, his name will be remembered for more than just the numbers in a history book. A Cardozo High School alumnus, the basketball coach will be remembered by his players and colleagues for his mentorship, perseverance and commitment to not just the team, but Cardozo overall.
