2026 kicked off in New York City with freezing temperatures and several snow storms. Over the past few weeks, over one foot of snow accumulated across the city, with temperatures dropping into the single digits. This kind of weather can be dangerous, with icy roads and hazardous winds, causing many issues for those who live in the city.
One of the bigger problems with the latest snow and freezing temperatures is that it impacts people’s everyday commute to work and school. The current conditions have made traveling throughout the city challenging. The roads have been covered with snow, and the freezing temperatures have turned that snow into ice, making it a danger for those who need to walk to and from home, work, and school; or, event to public transportation.
Residents of New York City have also struggled getting in and out of their cars with the plows having to pile snow onto the side of the streets. Some cars have been buried for over a week, with residents unable to shovel themselves out. Bus stops, in addition, have also not been cleared out and there have been little efforts from officials to make it easier to use the busses at all. No paths have been shoveled from the sidewalk to the bus, so those who need to take it end up stepping over piles of slippery ice and snow. The busses have also experienced delays due to the weather. With the freezing temperatures, some busses have had issues starting.
This drastically impacts the lives of residents across the five boroughs. Freezing temperatures make it hard to get around and get places on time, such as work and school. As a result, people show up late to work or students show up late to school. This leads to disciplinary action and can even cause people to lose their jobs.
With the snow and temperature drops, some people have even experienced power outages and lack of heat. Without heat or anything to stay warm, it’s easy to succumb to frostbite and other things such as hypothermia. New York City is known for also having a large homeless population, which further adds to the dangers of this weather. Outlets have reported since the weather has dropped so drastically in temperature, 17 New Yorkers have died.
Although first responders have done work to try and keep the streets clean and heat on for city residents, there seems to be a lot of issues that are not being dealt with. As more New Yorkers are reported to freeze outside, and the sidewalks still stock piled with ice, residents still fear for their safety when having to do everyday tasks.
It’s important that big cities like New York stay prepared for weather like this, especially because New York is not a “warm climate” state. To prepare, officials should have backups in place and a way to ensure that all residents can stay warm and stay safe, without disrupting their day-to-day lives.
