Photography is the art of capturing images with a light and a camera. Photos can be used to tell stories, document things, and are used in many fields like art and science. This year, one of the new clubs featured at Cardozo is the photography club, which consists of inspiring young photographers who want to pursue photography in one aspect of their lives.
Every Monday and Tuesday, the club meets in Room 135 of the main building. They discuss procedures, what the club is about, and partake in workshops. The workshops talk about learning how to take photos and different types of photos and techniques. For example, they talk about the rule of thirds, composition, bird’s eye view, worm’s eye view, and many other shots.
The club members come together to share their photographs and tell stories about what each shot means to them.

Many of the clubs member share that being in the photography club give them a space to be creative. Sophomore Zaiyana Azhar finds photography to fit into her hobbies like music and art. Both her dad and uncle are photographers and she grew up with a love for photography from an early age. She began to take photography more seriously after she won a competition in 6th grade.
“I believe photography is a window to one’s mind,” Azhar said. “They say ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ I still have so much to learn, but, I’m grateful to be given the opportunity to share my creativity with other students like-minded.”
Senior Shadman Alam was inspired by a friend to explore photography, but now enjoys how pictures can capture moments that sometimes words cannot. “Being part of creative project like this also gives me a chance to connect with others and see things from different perspectives,” Alam said. One of the things he enjoys most about photography is how pictures can tell an entire story.
Alexandrea Fannell found the photography club as a way to further her love for journalism and media. As a senior in the journalism program, she is able to take what she learns in class and bring it into her club. “Photography club is more than just a club,” Fannell explained. “It’s a place where we come together and share our creations and talk about it.”
The photography club, although a newer club, is one that many students feel connected in. The club also gives members some training for the real world, as photography is part of many industries such as media, journalism, advertising, and more. The members in the club find that coming together only makes them better at their craft.
For more information, students can follow the club’s Instagram to stay updated with news and events.
