Heart Eyes, released on Feb. 7, 2025, is a movie made by Josh Ruben. The general gist of the story behind the movie is that there’s a serial killer killing couples on Valentine’s Day. Every year this “Valentine Killer” would do these mass killings around the country, killing any couples from fiancées to boyfriends and girlfriends.
At the start of the movie, it showed viewers this media-like couple recording their engagement. While in the mist, a lovely occasion lingered in the air. Was it love? Or was it the feeling of immediate danger? Who knows?
The film is set in Seattle, where we meet our main character Ally, a gorgeous single lady who is still not over her ex and is about to be fired by her company for creating an advertising titled “Death till Us Part,” which promotes death inside a couple to sell jewelry. In my opinion, the advertisement was creative thinking. Yes, it was dark , but it represented love in a different light.
Ally meets this handsome man named Jay, and it appears to be love at first sight, but Ally soon finds Jay is her replacement at work. Following this intriguing realization, Jay invites Alley to a dinner date, persuaded by her closest friend Monica.
Honestly, the first 30 minutes of the movie had me laughing. I couldn’t even find the reason why, but it did. It gives off every cringy-vibe you see in an old romcom. But, it still carries the element of any slasher film. After the little dinner date, Ally saw her ex with a new girl, so in the heat of the moment, she kissed Jay. Just for it to seem like they were dating. But within this heated moment that lasted way too long, it caught the attention of the heart-eye killer.
Throughout the film, I soon realized my favorite characters were Monica, Ally’s best friend, and the killer. I feel more connected to them than any other character in the film. Especially the heart-eye killer; they are literally a large guy who is obviously envious of every lovey-dovey pair — literally myself in a different alternate universe. Monica carries the comedy throughout the film. She is portrayed as a strong, independent lady who happens to rely on older men for financial support.
Overall, this film has received 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.7 out of 10 rating on IMDb — which isn’t very good, especially for a new movie released this year. There have been many varied reviews for this film, with some hailing it as funny and loving the actor’s performance. However, according to Google reviews, many others thought the movie was a waste of time.
But, I highly recommend the reviewers to watch the movie themselves to make up their own judgment about it.
