Valentine’s Day, the day of love, originally started as a special day for Christians to remember a martyr named Valentine who died for their beliefs. Over time, it also became a day where people show love and affection to each other, and it’s celebrated in many different places around the world.
On this special day, people show how much they care about someone by giving them cards, presents, and sweet messages. With Valentine’s Day coming up, we asked some Cardozo students and teachers what their plans were. Here’s what they had to say:
Mrs. Biramian, an English teacher and the advisor of the yearbook, stated that although Valentine’s Day isn’t her favorite holiday, she is still going to do something special with her significant other.
“Due to the fact that most restaurants are overcrowded and overpriced, my husband and I usually like to stay home and watch movies together,” she explained. This is their way of showcasing their love to each other.
Mr. Georgatos, the assistant principal for social studies, music, and the naval sciences, has plans for Valentine’s Day with his wife. This holiday also happens to be his 20th wedding anniversary, which is very romantic. “My wife and I are going to go out on a date. My older daughter is going to watch the kids and we’ll eat really well,” Mr. Georgatos stated. 20 years in love is just the right way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
Elizabeth, a sophomore, shared that although she doesn’t have a boyfriend to spend her day with, she has her friends. “Last year I did a small get-together with my friends. This year I think we’re doing the same thing with just a different theme,” she shared.
Andrew, a senior, stated, “If I had a partner, you know, I’d probably take the partner out on a date. You know, maybe buy them some, like, chocolates or something… I mean, I don’t think I have anything planned….” Although he has no Valentine, he does add that he may take himself out, which is always good to do.
Ethan, a junior, stated, “I’m going home and I’m playing Fortnite.” Valentine’s isn’t just about sharing love with someone else but it’s always about self-love and this is his way of expressing love to himself.
“I’ll go to school and do my homework. That’s it,” Lana, a freshman, confessed to us.
Alexa, a sophomore, said for her Valentine’s Day, she will be going out with her boyfriend to celebrate. “I’m not sure what he has planned just yet but I’m super excited to find out,” she exclaimed.
Jaylen, a junior, said for his Valentine’s Day, he will be doing nothing, as he doesn’t really like the holiday. But, he does say next year will be his year for a Valentine.
Samatha, a senior says her sisters all gather and get gifts for each other. “We received gifts from each other last year, including candy and adorable tiny Valentine’s Day cards. That concludes it. You basically trade gifts, that’s it,” she recalled.
Valentine’s Day isn’t always about who you spend it with or how you spend it. The day is more about being able to showcase your love to those around you in a way to show they your love and appreciation.
