This past Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, was the Golden Globe Awards on CBS. The awards show was hosted by Jo Koy, an American comedian and actor. To look back, the first Golden Globe Awards were held in Jan. 1944, awarding the most honorable achievements in television and film. Some of the awards presented this year include Best Drama Motion Picture, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture, Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, and the list goes on! Now, let’s take a deeper dive into some of the main highlighted moments during the event.

Best Motion Picture

Best Motion Picture, or Drama Motion Picture, is one of the most prestigious Golden Globe Awards that has been awarded annually since 1944. This year’s nominees were the films Oppenheimer, The Zone of Interest, Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall, Maestro, and Killer of the Flower Moon. By no surprise, Oppenheimer took home the win. Oppenheimer is based on the scientist who led the Manhattan Project, who created an atomic bomb during World War II, and is played by Cillian Murphy.

The Barbie “Joke”

As host Jo Koy was making a few jokes during a pause in the award ceremony, he decided to bring up the movie Barbie. Koy continued to make the joke, “Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies,” which threw the audience completely off.

Barbie is based on the doll Barbie going through a journey of self-discovery about being a woman, exactly the opposite of what Koy made the movie out to be. After the joke was made, the audience was in complete silence and shock. Singer and actor Selena Gomez had to put her head down angrily because of how insulting the joke was.

The Night’s Featured Couple

A couple that was filmed and featured heavily during the award ceremony was Timothee Chalamet and Kylie Jenner. This couple had been rumored for some time but have recently been more open about their relationship, which paparazzi couldn’t get enough of. This was to the point that it was rumored that Selena Gomez asked Chalamet for a photo, which Jenner declined for him, and Gomez supposedly discussed the moment with her friends later. However, for the most part, this rumor was debunked.

Overall, this year’s Golden Globe Awards were truly one to remember with all of the amazing shows and films featured. Now the wait begins to tune into next year’s award ceremony
