Every year, tourists come from all over the world to experience a New York holiday. Though the weather is cold, it’s definitely the most festive time in the city. People come from all over the world to see the iconic staples during December. But, some people live a few boroughs away and never see the magical traditions the city has to offer. This year, there’s no better way to celebrate the holidays and winter break than visiting some of New York’s epic displays and attractions.
5. Shopping and Displays
All over New York, shopping centers are decorated for the holidays in many different ways. Obviously, the picture opportunities are endless. You don’t have to be a tourist to revel in its beauty. There are also many displays along the streets such as the large red ornaments across from Radio City. In addition to all these activities, it’s nice to go shopping and see the spirit of the holidays. Don’t forget to hit the Macy’s in Midtown to see their beautiful displays.
4. Ice Skating
We all know and love ice skating, even if it does come with the cold weather and falling on ice. There’s a number of places all around NYC that offer the seasonal sport to the public. Most famously, in Rockefeller Center just feet away from the Rockefeller Christmas tree, you can ice skate in the center.
This rink is open to buying tickets online prior, and renting skates if needed. There’s also the other famous rink in Bryant Park, where the same rules apply, but there may be less people and different pricing.
3. The Shops at Bryant Park
Located on 5th Avenue, Bryant Park is a must see during any winter. There’s ice skating, shops, markets, a tree, and more. Bryant Park has been around for many years, but has gone viral on social media platforms, resulting in it being very busy year round.
Their marketplace at the entrance houses many small businesses open shopping. As you go further into the park, there are food stands with a variety of options next to the ice skating rink. Lastly, there’s a large, beautiful tree ending the area of Bryant Park.
2. Light Shows
NYC offers a number of light shows. Most famously the Saks 5th Avenue has their own light show in Manhattan. First off, the location is extremely convenient as its only a block or two from the Rockefeller Center tree. Their annual light show is a main attraction for those visiting the area and is most definitely worth it. If you’re interested in going, it runs daily on 5th Avenue, every 10 minutes, from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. It evokes emotion and is simply beautiful.
There’s also the Jones Beach light show on Long Island, New York, which allows you to drive through a series of light displays with a pit stop before the exit, consisting of more lights, seating areas, Santa pictures, sleigh pictures, and stands for hot chocolate or snacks.
1. Rockefeller Center Tree
Located in Rockefeller Center, Manhattan, this tree lighting is a classic holiday tradition many have come to love. It starts with the ceremony where the tree is lit and ends in January when they take it down. Even during the pandemic, this festivity wasn’t cancelled. If there was only one thing everyone knew and would want to keep around, it would be this. On top of being beautiful, it can also be seen as a sign of unity seeing as everyone gathers together to witness such a sight.
