Democrats had a victory for the history books on Nov 7, Election Day 2025. There was a huge “Blue Sweep” across the ballot in numerous states across the nation.
In New York, Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani won the race for New York City Mayor. Over a million New Yorkers raced to the polls to vote Mamdani (50.1%). He defeated Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, and former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo ran as an Independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani.
More than 2 million New Yorkers cast ballots, making this the largest voter turnout in a mayoral election in over 50 years.
The 34-year-old Democrat has promised to bring back power to the working class, making it clear that he stands with the people of New York, not the corporations. Mamdani is also the city’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest to be elected in a century. Mamdani’s victory is representative of a new wave of Democrats who are in favor of more progressive candidates.
Across the Hudson River, New Jersey experienced a similar victory. Democrat Mikie Sherrill won the race for New Jersey’s governor. She is a former federal prosecutor and four-term congresswoman.
Sherrill has promised to fight back against policies the Trump administration has implemented that she and the Democratic party disagree with. She openly spoke out against the Trump administration’s moves to stop federal subsidies for Obamacare, slash federal food assistance, and cancel the Gateway tunnel project.
Similar to Mamdani, Sherrill painted her race as a choice between the MAGA movement and democracy. Both politicians have been very vocal about their disapproval of the Trump administration.
By 11pm on election night, the Associated Press reported Sherril had won with 56% of the vote. The newly elected governor said, “I know not everyone voted for me. But I’m working for everyone. Every single one of you. When we all do better, we all do better. So tomorrow begins a new day.”
Pennsylvania also experienced a blue wave, as the Democratic party preserved swing-state control. Three liberal judges, Kevin Dougherty, Christine Donohue and David Wecht, won another 10-year term.
This victory enables Democrats to maintain a 5-2 advantage on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The three Democrats were first elected in 2015. Pennsylvania elects supreme court justices in partisan elections and every ten years voters can then decide to maintain them or not.
The largest blue wave occurred in the state of Virginia. Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated Republic Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. She is a former congresswoman and CIA case officer.
As Spanberger campaigned, she spoke out against President Trump’s policies from an economic standpoint. She traveled throughout Virginia campaigning, including in Republican-leaning southern, rural regions. Spanberger is making history as the first woman to ever lead the commonwealth. Her victory has also helped tip the balance in favor of Democrats in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
In addition to Spanberger, Democrat Ghazala F. Hashmi was elected as lieutenant governor. She will succeed Earle-Sears as the first muslim woman to win a statewide office in the United States.
Virginia experienced a wave of firsts. Also on Tuesday, Democrat Jay Jones won the race for attorney general. Jones’s platform focused on combatting the Trump administration, speaking out against the impact of federal encroachment on Virginia.
Election Day results this year have shown how a politician’s decision to campaign on a platform against the Trump administration has led to their victory. The surge of blue across the country showcases that voters are ready for a change. These victories have inspired hope in many across the country, especially students who are nearing voting age.
