As high school students, we all know how important our one-week break is. As good as a staycation might be, it’s good to get out sometimes for a real vacation out of our comfort zones. Keeping this in mind, we are only high school students who are probably broke. So, here are some fairly affordable vacation spots for President’s Week. Keep in mind you can drive or fly to certain places on this list.
Florida
There’s a lot to do in Florida, even if it’s not the famous mouse house. Miami is the main spot I would recommend. If you come from a hot country like I do, you’ll see that Florida is like the best of both worlds. It gives the homey vibes and warmth while also having all available like the city we all call home.
In Doral, City Place is a nice center with restaurants, a movie theater, bowling, and other fun things to do. There are also safaris along Florida along with the everglades are also there if you’re interested in the gator aspect.
South beach is also very famous. Versace’s restaurant where he was shot is there and the beach is a wonderful tourist and local attraction. The area of Brickelle is like our equivalent to the city. It’s definitely a change of pace from New York, but in a good way, sort of refreshing before coming back to the hustle and bustle of it all.
The cruise ships dock right there so it truly is a sight to see. Another one of my favorite Florida activities is hot air balloon rides. No matter where you’re staying in the Sunshine State, I guarantee you there’s something nice to do or visit around.
Upstate New York
The things to do upstate are endless. Even though its still winter, there are countless opportunities to be taken advantage of and adventures to be experienced. These winter activities could also include skiing/snowboarding. Resorts such as camelback and mountain creek offer many options. The whole family can rent a place or even stay at a hotel while making use of the things to do in the area.
Ice Skating is another possibility at any local arena. You also can’t go wrong with a hike or zip-lining. The wildlife upstate is close to us and gives great views as well. Legoland is also located in Goshen, NY. I highly doubt you can see any stars here in New York City, but travel a little to the outskirts and witness a beautiful starry night.
American Dream Mall
This huge mall is like no other! Only about an hour and a half drive, maybe two hours, located in New Jersey. This center contains so many things to do. I bet you could spread it out within the week. If you even just happen to be in New Jersey over break, it’s nice to visit.
I’d highly recommend it, especially since some of us travel further than that to go to school or even to manhattan. Here’s some of what they offer—Nickelodeon universe theme park, Dream Works indoor water park, and Big Snow indoor snow resort. Within these sections in addition to an overall look, there’s also a Legoland discovery center, mini golf, an ice skating rink, and so much more. It’s even home to North America’s first and only indoor, real snow, year round, ski and snow resort. How much more convincing does one need because I know that was more than enough for me!
New Orleans
Speaking of experiencing new things, New Orleans is the best place to do so. It may be a little unorthodox to think about a random place such as this, but when you think about it, it’s really a no brainer. New Orleans has a surplus of culture and trying new things could be just what’s needed before coming back to school.
The food options are unimaginable with the cuisine being mouth-watering. I also happen to know my vampire diary fans would kill to visit Bourbon Street. Many areas in New Orleans also have showings available like comedy shows, meet and greets, and more.
California
The wonderful golden state of Cali. Where to begin when there are so many great topics in one area. First off, the famous Golden Gate Bridge that was even in Full House is a must see. The photo ops are beautiful as well. Secondly, the history in this place is rich! Figuratively and literally seeing as cali got its “golden state” nickname from having much gold during the gold rush found by miners.
Last but certainly not least, which may be my favorite part of this state, basketball. The Golden State Warriors with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and more, originated here. There are many museums and other fan favorites to visit here. The Hollywood sign is an obvious point of reference and interest that you simply can’t miss. Also well known for the film industry, try to sneak behind the scenes somewhere!
Maine
You know those movies and small town books, here’s your chance to have that in real life. There are so many small towns in Maine that they feel extremely homey. Find a bed and breakfast and look around the little shops. These small towns always have hidden gems and when you make nice with those who live there, their recommendations will give you a new sense of life. It’s much different from New York but looking at it is refreshing to see how connected everyone is.
Washington D.C.
Many people in New York have never been out of New York, not that our city’s not great and all, but there’s so many other places available to witness. The other states may be a long drive or a short plane ride away but others come from all over the world to see these things when we are relatively close but never seize the opportunity. I’d say this is a perfect time to do so. Washington D.C not only spreads knowledge but makes you gain an understanding of our country’s history. We read and do lessons about all these things in class, so why not see it in person. I think it’d be truly fascinating.
College Visits!
Some people can’t take a whole week of straight relaxing and that’s okay too. This is a perfect time to think about college and your future. You can do this and also go on a little vacation by doing college visits. Tour a campus you’re interested in, explore the area you might be in for four years in the future.
See who’s around, what’s around, and get a better idea of what you want to do so it won’t seem as stressful later on. It may not even be stressful right now if you make it a fun vacation with family and friends or even for a personal journey. Schedule a tour online and do some research beforehand though.
