The rise of the cold temperatures in New York has caused many New Yorkers to bundle up in preparation for freezing temperatures. What better way to stay warm during the colder months than to enjoy a basketball game?
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the varsity boy’s basketball team played against Springfield Gardens, ending the game in a 51-40 victory for Cardozo.
The game started at 5 p.m. and was held at the home of the Judges. The cold weather didn’t stop the crowd from showing up and supporting Cardozo. Parents and students alike reunited unanimously to root for their team. All basketball games charge students $3 with an S.O. Card to enter, while those without an S.O. card pay $5. An ID is needed to enter to spectate the game, every student is also checked to see if they are on the No-Go list as well.
Coached by varsity coach Ron Naclerio, the boys were more than prepared for their game. Their passes were agile and their movements were precise. The first quarter of the game, Cardozo started off strong, with 12 points on the board, while Springfield had eight points. By halftime, the team was winning with 26 points while Springfield had 16. The team stayed strong all throughout the game and were able to win.
One of the players from the Cardozo basketball team, Justin, who made a dunk in the game, expressed how he felt during that moment. “It felt great. Getting the crowd and my teammates hype,” he reflected.
He also explained what it was like being in the athletic field in such a big school like Cardozo, “Honestly, it’s a lot knowing the pressure is on you, but you just gotta breathe and take it one step at a time.”
With their victory, the boys received cheering from the crowd who celebrated their success with applause. Overall, the boys are looking at a very victorious season.
