Teaching at Cardozo High School is a lifelong passion for Ms. Lakhani, developed by years of dedication and perseverance. She combines her passion for literature with her commitment to supporting student’s academic and personal development.
Ms. Lakhani became a teacher at Cardozo in 2003 and has inspired her students ever since. She began her journey at Cardozo while working as a student teacher under former English teacher Mr. Kerrigan’s mentorship.
“I was lucky enough to student teach at Cardozo,” she stated. “And I was hired right after I graduated in 2003.”
Throughout her time here, Ms. Lakhani has taught every grade level, teaching classes in college writing, Asian American Literature, and film studies — now known as art of film. Currently, she teaches advanced placement language and composition, challenging her students with difficult classwork to further improve their critical thinking skills and encourage a sense of love for literature.
Her goal as a teacher goes beyond just academics. “I hope they learn some life lessons from the literature we read,” she said. “And I hope they appreciate that high school is one of the places where they will learn a lot about themselves.”
What sets Ms. Lakhani apart is her dedication to creating engaging lessons that correlate with her students. She finds inspiration in her colleagues and enjoys being creative in her teaching, always looking for methods to turn her classroom into a place for learning and insight.
“I enjoy learning from my colleagues and being creative with my lessons,” she said, showcasing her insightful approach to teaching.
Outside of school, Ms. Lakhani loves to spend time with her family — her two sons and her husband. Showcasing a sense of balance between her personal life with her professional life, she enjoys building connections both in the classroom and at home.
Her journey at Cardozo shows her dedication to her students and her strong belief in the power of education. Understanding oneself is just as important as knowing literature in her classes. Ms. Lakhani continues to help shape young minds, leaving a lasting impact on everyone in and outside of school.
