Spain’s Prime Minister is facing challenges beyond the devastating flood that recently struck the country.
The flood, which resulted in the tragic loss of 211 lives and left nearly 2,000 citizens missing, has left many residents furious. They are accusing the authorities of failing to properly warn them about the disaster and have expressed frustration over the absence of recovery teams in the aftermath.
In response to the criticism, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and King Felipe VI chose to visit some of the towns hit the hardest by the flooding to show solidarity and also grieve with the affected people.
However, their visit was met with backlash. Protests escalated into violence as crowds threw bottles and mud at the Prime Minister, the King, and other members of royalty. They had to be escorted away for their safety.
Later, Sánchez addressed the media, saying, “I want to convey all our solidarity and our recognition of the anguish and suffering of the people of Paiporta,” while rejecting the violence that day.
In the meantime, citizens affected by the floods continue to live among the ruins of their former homes, surrounded by unburied and unidentified bodies.
This situation has intensified pressure on the royal family, especially after violent incidents during the Prime Minister’s and King’s visit to Paiporta, where they were confronted by a crowd wielding shovels. Although Sánchez was unharmed, his vehicle sustained damage from a broken window. Consequently, the royal family has decided to pause their visits to flood-affected areas due to safety concerns.
