Excitement has spread across the globe for soccer fans and New Yorkers alike as new information has arisen about a new soccer stadium coming to New York.
New Yorkers approved a plan to build a stadium for Major League Soccer that will house 25,000 people. This large-scale upgrade now puts soccer on par with other big New York stadiums across the state. The new build gives soccer fans a place to call their home, instead of sharing a stadium with other sports, as they have done in the past.
While there is a lot of anticipation for the new stadium in New York, it is set to cost a whopping $780 million, with an opening date expected to be sometime in 2027.
The new stadium is New York City’s first venue dedicated to professional soccer. Before New York City Football Club (NYCFC) has primarily played its home games at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx since its first debut in the league in 2015.
In addition, NYCFC has regularly been forced to play at Citi Field. This new stadium means a lot to soccer players as they now have their own dedicated place to come together and enjoy a sport that has been played for a millennia.
This build will also be a part of a new, 23-acre neighborhood, in Willets Point Queens. It was made by Queens Development Group as a joint venture of Related Companies and Sterling Equities. The neighborhood has 2,500 new housing units which is 100% affordable for citizens. It also has a new 650-seat public school, a brand-new hotel, and more than 150,000 square feet of public open space.
The Willets Point redevelopment project is estimated to generate $6.1 billion in economic activity and create 1,550 permanent jobs, and 14,200 construction jobs. Overall this project is great for football fans and the state of New York, bringing another entertainment area to the already booming state.
While the project is ongoing, fans and players wait in anticipation for their new stadium.
