The medical field is a rapidly growing industry that many students wish to pursue the field in the future. It is a career path that requires a lot of experience and exposure, many of which students get through internships while in college.
However, students do not need to wait until college to earn experience in the field, as Cardozo offers various healthcare and medical-related clubs that provide opportunities for students to pursue their interest in healthcare. One of these clubs is the Pre-Med Club.
The Pre-Med club is a medical and healthcare-related club that meets every Monday after school, in room 209 of the main building. The club functions with the goal to help their members learn more about and develop a stronger passion for the healthcare and medical field, while finding ways to allow them to find ways to pursue their passion outside of the school.
“The Pre-Med Club aims to teach others about the medical and healthcare field and provide opportunities and internships so members can flourish outside the school,” shared the club’s president, Naomi Chang.
At meetings, the club offers a different event or lesson every week, while trying to target as many of the different areas of the medical field as possible. Their club meetings range from lessons on medical specialties to inviting guest speakers to speak with the members. It helps students learn more about the medical field and the steps it takes to go on into medical school, making it a great club to join for any students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or healthcare.
“Our club provides networking opportunities by inviting doctors, residents and professionals in the healthcare/medical field where members can ask questions one on one,” Chang explained.
The Pre-med club, as stated earlier, provides many activities for its members to participate in.
“Students can ask questions during our guest panels, work in groups to solve medical problems, or create presentations about their favorite medical topic,” Chang elaborated. “We do different things every week, one week we might draw the body system, the next might be learning how to write a research paper.”
Chang also said that the Pre-Med Club has been around four years — although it has changed its name a few times.
“The board members have a deep interest in professions related to the medical and healthcare field, whether it be becoming a Doctor, Nurse or PA,” Chang explained.
“All the board members also have done lots of outside work like internships, volunteering, and research with names like NASA and Weill Cornell Medicine and Zucker School of Medicine from Hofstra University. These opportunities were exposed to us from when we just regular members and now we want to inspire and showcase more opportunities for members,” she elaborated.
