Cardozo has many art classes to offer with a countless number of talented students who attend them. Every year, the art teachers hold an art show to display the students’ work they created throughout their classes. The art show for 2024 featured multiple unique displays from stop motion to recycled crafts.
‘We typically begin planning around March, and then little by little we start making a few decisions here and there probably say around March, and then the bulk of it has to be done right before the art show begins because this room is utilized by the other teachers,” explained Mr. Lavelle, an art teacher at Cardozo, who helped to put together the event alongside other teachers.
The event had projects from many students. Different sections featured artworks such as cardboard cutouts of outfits from different cultures, comic books, Tim-Burton self-portraits, and many more.
The gallery is open to any students who want to come in while it is still up, and many classes have already come down to admire the artwork.
“Even though this is a huge building, and we house about over 3,000 students, it’s still very challenging finding the right place with enough space because you want to curate it and want it delayed so it makes sense in the space. So, it’s cohesive and so basically is an installation that we put up. Almost like a mini museum. The objects don’t always match up but you place them in a way that makes sense for the person coming and seeing the exhibit,” Ms. Kim, an art teacher at Cardozo, stated her experience working on the gallery.
There was a lot of hardwork and effort put into the gallery as both students and teachers had meticulously worked all year to bring to life their creativity in the form of various art projects. It is apparent that each piece was made with a lot of passion from the students who created it.
Angelina Levin, a student observer of the art gallery, stated, “I like it, I think it shows a lot of creativity between my peers and the school itself. I didn’t expect there to be actual stop motion here which is cool.”
Other students particularly crowded around the Cardozo Comics section, which featured fun illustrations about the experiences of a Cardozo student. Next to it was an area where visitors of the show were able to draw their own pictures made up of an ‘X’ shape, which was also featured as a work of art.
The art show is very significant to both the students and teachers working on it, as it serves as a goal to work towards for those who are taking art.
“This thing really moves us all the time and it keeps you going forward every day and it’s not just a response, it’s always the little reactions, the little things that people say, and they really bring tears to their eyes,” Ms. Kim expressed.
Both staff and students have shown their interest in the art show this year, as seen by how many have already attended.
“Seeing it all in place and seeing the reactions of the people who come to visit I would say is the most rewarding,” said Mr. Lavelle, concluding his thoughts.
