Every May, millions of people gather to celebrate the 5th of the month, also known as Cinco de Mayo. We all know about Cinco de Mayo, but do we really know the history behind why it is celebrated? It’s way more than just gathering for some delicious tacos.
This annual celebration on May 5th is the anniversary of Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. This was led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. French troops were better equipped and had way more soliders, so the triumph was a huge boost for the Mexican soldiers.
The Mexican military overcame unbelievable odds, so every year it is celebrated. Many may think this is Mexico’s independence day, but it is not. This is because this battle was the second French intervention in Mexico. But against all overwhelming challenges, how did Mexico truly beat France? They repulsed the attackers, who lost about 1,000 men and then retreated to the coast. Brigadier General Porfirio Diaz also succeeded in turning back a flank of the invading french army.
Casualties included nearly 500 on the French side with more than 100 killed in action and Mexican losses of 85 deaths with over 100 wounded. Contrary to popular belief, many don’t actually celebrate this occasion in Mexico. 162 years ago, Mexican Americans started celebrating it here in the U.S., with roots in California.
This battle was obviously significant in history with not only the French-Mexican war, but it also influenced countless other events. It is extremely important to countless people who realize the sacrifice and depth of winning this battle, and more. So, while you celebrate this year, remember those who fought for their victories.
