Nigel Sylvester, an international athlete, mostly known for his BMX skills, partnered with JP Morgan Chase to educate kids about balancing their finances. Nigel Sylvester has a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of youth and uniting diverse communities. Representatives from the partnership attended Cardozo High School on April 11th to speak to students about financial literacy and how to achieve financial success.
What is Financial Literacy
Financial literacy is the ability to understand and effectively use various financial skills, including personal financial management, budgeting, and investing. Being financially literate can help start a lifelong journey of learning about the financial aspects of your life. The earlier you learn about financial literacy the better because if you lack financial literacy, it can be very damaging to anyone’s long-term financial success.
Financial literacy is an important topic to talk about because nowadays banking and maintaining finances is not really talked about amongst the youth, so it’s important that this workshop reaches its target audience and educates them as well.
Cardozo’s Workshop
During the workshop, the representatives focused on traditional banking accounts—checking and saving. They also focused on cyber security and the importance of credit. The whole point of the workshop was to explain to the students the importance of financial health and empower them with the skills that they need to succeed in their financial journeys.
The students were able to ask questions about anything they were curious about or just wanted to know in general about finances and this allowed them to have a better understanding of why it is so important to know what financial literacy is.
Overall, the workshop was extremely beneficial to students who will soon be going out into the workforce or opening their own credit cards and managing their own money.
