When applying to high schools, many students may wonder, ‘what are the advantages of going to a specialized school?’ Others may be curious to know if they are that much different than going to a generalized high school.
Specialized high schools are for students who excel academically or artistically. Depending on what school it is, students are given more advanced classes or more specialized activities in comparison to a generalized high school.
Compared to generalized schools, you have to be more on top of the work that you have to complete. Since the classes are more advanced, the students will have to spend more time on the work, as it’s definitely given in a higher quantity.
When deciding on whether or not to attend a specialized high school, something that plays a big part in school is transportation. Many specialized high schools in New York City are located further away from students—with some in different boroughs. Not many high school students have the opportunity to buy their own car or have someone drive them. They would have to take the bus and/or train. This can also be very dangerous for young students to travel by themselves, especially if they plan to do clubs or sports and stay late.
With more advanced classes, students will have to be more engaged with each subject. This means that if you play a sport it will be harder since the classes are hard and expect more out of you.
These specialized schools also have a very big impact on student’s mental health because of all the work that needs to be completed. Many students feel more pressure when they go to a specialized high school.
Overall, it shouldn’t matter about the school that you go to, but the work that you do in the high school that matters. For example, if you go to a specialized high school and are only focused on grades and nothing else it would be hard for colleges to remember you. What stands out is what you do outside of classes and the extra stuff you do.
If you go to a generalized high school and are very involved in school activities and have good grades, it should be a no-brainer and easier for colleges to have you attend and for you to stand out. A specialized high school shouldn’t change the way colleges view you.
So, if you are looking to get into a good college but don’t attend a specialized high school, don’t worry. If you have good grades and are involved in your school, you should be set.
