Every year on Mar. 8, International Women’s Day is commemorated to honor the many achievements of women across the world. It’s to celebrate the social, political, and economic feats of women. During this day, many public places in various countries decorate the streets in pink and purple to honor women internationally.
History
The idea to create an international holiday for women was coined by socialist leader Cara Zetkin. According to the Economic Times, “Some people say it began in 1909 when socialist women and textile workers in New York marched demanding shorter hours, higher pay, and the opportunity to vote.”
The holiday was later on recognized by many countries and is seen as a significant day for all women around the world.
How is it Celebrated
Countries like China allow women to take a half-day off work for this holiday. In countries like Italy and Poland, women are given flowers so they can be honored during this special occasion.
In the U.S., people organize rallies, events, performances, and celebrations to honor this important holiday for all the strong women who make up our country.
