Have you ever thought about the things that people are gonna see on your social media? Or, whether they think it’s good or bad? Social media is a very impactful thing to be using, whether it be good or bad. Many of the things people post on social media can be turned into something bad, without them even realizing it.
Teenagers are not aware of the things that they post online and how it can negatively affect them down the road. They can think what they post is cool at the moment, but down the road can create a negative image. People can make anything that you post seem bad, or even inappropriate.
When teenagers start to apply to different colleges or even jobs that they want to do after their high school experience, the people in charge are going to want to look after everything that is public online. IT is very easy to “Google” someone on the internet. Take for example influencers—many people don’t like some of them and the things that they say or do online. So, when they do something wrong, people are quick to attack them to make it seem like they are a bad person, even thought they may not be in reality.
The internet is something that is never going to go away, it will only keep growing. Once something is on the internet, it never goes away—even though you can’t see it. It’s called a digital footprint. This is why people who are looking to hire young adults are looking them up online and doing background checks.
Those in charge are going to want to look at that individual’s social media profiles to see the person that they really are, or how they present themselves. The people whom teens post about or post with online can impact them, as well.
Insight Magazine states, “In fact, 96 percent of recruiters and companies use social media to vet candidates according to the 2016 Recruiter Nation survey by Jobvite, which also points out that 55 percent of recruiters have had to reconsider candidates based on what was found on their social media profiles. Some of their top turn-offs? Illegal drug references, sexual posts, poor spelling/grammar, profanity, and posts about guns and alcohol consumption.” This proves that jobs care about what their employees are posting.
Social media can also create false pretenses about people’s lives to make it seem like they have a perfect life when they actually don’t. This would lead jobs to think that potential hires ”have it all together” and they don’t. This means it can make it worse when they find out someone isn’t really qualified for the position.
When teens are posting on social media, they should try to always be positive because they never know who is looking at what they post. Something to remember as well is to be mindful of how you want to present yourself to other people. It’s never a good thing to be seen as a hateful or rude person.
No matter what someone is posting people can make it to be a negative thing. Social media can truly impact people in negative ways. That’s why when posting online, everyone has to be very careful—or it can turn out very badly.
