On November 13th, 1998, World Kindness Day was born. It is observed in many countries, including Canada, Australia, Nigeria, and the United Arab Emirates. It’s that time of the year when people celebrate the act of kindness and its impact on the world.
This time of the year serves as an opportunity to make a positive difference by being generous. The theme of this year is to: “Be Kind Whenever Possible.” Kindness comes in many forms such as expressing gratitude, giving motivational speeches, holding the door for someone or helping someone with their work. Whether it be putting a smile on someone’s face, it’s all about spreading the positive vibe and radiating optimism.
Many people around Cardozo High School shared their ways of showing and spreading kindness. We asked a few people around school what kindness means to them.
Some of the Cardozo staff voiced their message of kindness. Assistant Principal Korotki stated, “I think that everyone should just project positivity; don’t focus on the negative, focus on the positive aspects of your life.”
English teacher and dean Ms. Eshaghian shared, “People should be more willing to listen and less jump to conclusions and follow the bandwagon of what others are doing because that is where things spiral out of control.”
In addition, Assistant Principal Georgatos expressed that people should, “Treat others as you want to be treated.”
Students have had a lot to say about kindness. “Be open minded and try new things,” shared one student. Another student mentioned that you should “treat others the way you want to be treated and try to be a decent person.” And, yet another student stated that, “actions speak louder than words so anything that you can do to help someone out even if it’s the simplest of actions can make all the difference.”
No matter the day, be the rainbow in someone’s cloud because sometimes all it takes is a bit of kindness to brighten up that person’s day. Projecting kindness is a big leap for mankind and an even bigger leap towards a kinder world. Kindness is known for its lasting impact on increasing a person’s self-worth. Not only that but kindness is also known for increasing empathy.
Remember, “Don’t give up on yourself, and always be a helpful person.”
