As the month of October begins, so does the anticipated and annual one-day event hosted by Cardozo High School students and staff alike; the club fair. Every year, hundreds of students push and squeeze their way through the crowded track to check out the tables hosted by dozens of unique clubs, learning about the clubs and what they have to offer. Curiosity and excitement fill the air as they decide which clubs they will join.
Why Should You Join a Club?
Students can benefit from joining clubs, whether it’s socially, educationally, or maybe just trying to relax and have fun. There are so many reasons as to why students should join a club, but when speaking to students, we found the most common answer being for college applications and resumes.
Clubs and extracurriculars help colleges and employers see what kind of activities students take part in outside of the classroom. Joining a club is also a great way to meet new people and make friends, especially if you’re a freshman. “It’s overall a really fun experience and doing things surrounded by your friends” added Elaine Chang, a captain of the Debate Club.
What Kind Of Clubs Are There?
Clubs can be split up into four categories: clubs that seek to educate, entertain, unite, and help the community.
Clubs that seek to educate are clubs that want to teach their members about a certain topic. An example of one of these clubs is the First Aid Club. This club teaches students about first aid necessities, like basic CPR, how to clot bleeding wounds, how to treat concussions, and lots more. “We cover pretty much everything there is to learn about first aid throughout the year. Last year, we almost covered everything, and we plan to cover more this year,” shared Jannatul Tabassum, the president of the First Aid Club. Other clubs that educate include culture clubs, that teach and celebrate different cultures throughout the Cardozo school community.
Clubs that seek to entertain mainly involve games and other entertainment things. These clubs want their members to have fun through various activities, whether it’s board games, video games, or sports. These clubs include the Activities Club, Badminton Club, Debate Club, and D&D Club.
Lastly, clubs that seek to help the community are clubs that want to help make the world a better and safer place. These clubs often participate in activities like community service and volunteer work, that help you learn about the world around you. An example of clubs like these are Green Team, Key Club, and Animal Charity.
If you missed the club fair, don’t worry. Students can find a list of clubs on the Cardozo High School website. Along with these clubs, students can also find their president, advisor, room number, and club mission. Additionally, The Verdict will be starting a Club Spotlight section, where we visit individual clubs and the experience there. Clubs are a great way to make friends, find something to do, and something to fill an application or resume. We hope you’ll find something right for you, and something that best fits your interests!
In addition, clubs that seek to unite usually target a specific group of people. They aim to unite these people from their common interests, traits, and experiences. An example of these clubs are the Women’s Empowerment Club, Afro- Caribbean Student Association, and Black Student Union.
