This year, you may see a new face when you stroll through Cardozo High School’s hallways. Chase Etheridge is a recent transfer to our school community, coming from Holy Cross High School, and is ready to leave his mark on the school through athletics and academics.
Coming from another school and stepping into a new chapter can be hard. But, the high schooler is currently doing it with grace and is happy to be part of the big community at Cardozo.
“Cardozo has so much opportunity for success,” Etheridge said. “I feel like I fit in perfectly.” Starting on the boys varsity basketball team this winter, he is at school after hours to practice, balancing all of his academics with being a student athlete. Although this can be challenging, Etheridge finds ways to balance the stress to find success.
“At times it can be [challenging], but I believe when you are passionate enough about something you can achieve anything,” he explained.
Etheridge has learned to have a positive outlook on both wins and losses in his sport, because every game is a test of his character. His losses serve as a reminder to keep up the good work and keep being consistent. His involvement in sports and being academically successful has also aided in the development of his determination and consistency, which are qualities that will benefit him in every aspect of life.
Transferring to Cardozo this year, there were a lot of major changes that Etheridge had to go through, such as scanning into the building every morning. Currently, Cardozo has had temporary metal detectors in place for morning entry. Etheridge stated that the scanning days have made it hard for him to get to class on time in the morning, but, “this is only a small problem compared to the other wonderful things Cardozo has to offer.”
When Etheridge is not on the basketball court, or studying for his classes, he’s off reading and learning new languages. Right now he’s studying Spanish and hopes to be bilingual one day.
Etheridge has a goal to graduate with an advanced diploma at the end of senior year. He also wants to make it big in the sport of basketball, which is why he dedicates so much time and effort to it. As a backup plan, he wants to be a lawyer or a businessman for the NBA. He wants to bring home good grades and be the best version of himself that he can be, so his dreams of making it big in life can be accomplished.
