Becoming a teacher is an exciting, yet nerve wracking experience, especially if one begins to question themselves. For many teachers, landing a full time job that you love and adore, especially in this day and age, is something to be proud of. It’s also something that many do not take for granted. For Ms. Karcinski, who is in her first year of teaching full time, going from part-time teaching to full-time teaching at Cardozo was a decision she will never regret.
Starting her career at Cardozo two years ago as a student teacher, Ms. Karcinski then began working as a substitute teacher. She eventually then worked as a leave replacement for the 2024-2025 school year before being offered a position full-time. Despite having been placed in our school because of a college placement, Ms. Karcinski quickly grew to love it here.
“I’ve always heard a lot of good things about this school and I’m glad I got placed here because I ended up not wanting to leave,” she said. Growing up and living in the Bayside area, she also enjoys that the commute is easy. Ms. Karcinski explained that especially in an environment where she doesn’t know anyone, she’s glad to have had a very warm welcome and she’s thankful to have met such amazing colleagues at Cardozo.
In her classroom, she tries her best to make students feel at home. Her classroom, built around the idea of mutual respect, is an open and safe environment for all students. Especially in today’s world where students suffer with social anxieties and inability to speak in class, it’s important that they come to an environment where they feel welcomed. Ms. Karcinski tries her absolute hardest to eliminate fear and anxiety in her classroom, so students do not worry about judgement or ridicule from friends or peers.
Being in the Cardozo community, Ms. Karcinski reflected that what she most looks forward to is getting to know her students. During her first years at Cardozo as a sub, she went through different schedules and content areas, so being able to have a set schedule is exciting for her. She is also excited to be able to have a hand in the revamping of Cardozo’s literary magazine.
She said it is, “A bit of a learning curve,” but is excited nonetheless and will quickly adjust. She advised students and staff alike to take advantage of resources as well as staying alert. Especially in light of recent events, she advised students to take advantage of the many resources at Cardozo, such as the crisis counselors. “It definitely helps with being able to freely talk without feeling like you’re going to be judged,” she said.
Ms. Karcinski’s decision to stay at the school where her teaching journey began truly shows how the Cardozo environment, staff, and students are truly welcoming. It proves that the school is a great place for new teachers, as well. Ms. Karcinski is looking forward to a long and rewarding career here.
