Most people think teachers are boring and just hang out at school grading work all day. But that’s not true, teachers have cool and interesting lives outside of school, too. Some of them have hobbies like swimming, golfing, and playing different sports. During the fall, some teachers like to get competitive and turn the football season into their own personal battle for glory.
Fantasy football is a game in which you pretend to be the owner, general manager and coach of your own team while competing against friends. You pick actual NFL players to build your team, even if they play for different teams in real life. Every time your players score in a live game, those points go toward your fantasy team’s point total. At the end of a week, the team with the most points wins, and then you get assigned to play a new opponent on another team in the following weeks. Fantasy football is both fun and brings people together.
It also gives people something to look forward to every week. While some people like to watch football to watch their favorite team, fantasy football gives viewers a reason to watch multiple games, even when their favorite team is not playing.
Mr. King, a social studies teacher, has been making fantasy football teams since he was a freshman in high school. He said he’s always really loved fantasy football, and even suggested that students who also enjoy it could start a club, so he can share a piece of his childhood with some of the Cardozo students.
Mr. Hashinsky, another social studies teacher and dean, had a similar experience with fantasy football growing up. Mr Hashinsky has been playing for a while and prefers to compete with friends.
“It’s more fun when you’re playing with friends,” he said.
Both Mr. King and Mr. Hashinsky are currently facing each other in the same fantasy league. “It makes it more interesting and the competition part makes me feel more engaged in the sport and for the love of the game,” King said.
The two social studies teachers have great players, too. Hashinsky has Josh Jacobs, while King’s top player is Tyler Wonkey. Every Sunday, the two watch. They both seem very determined to beat each other this year in their league and they are very confident in each of their line ups.
It’s nice to see that teachers are also interested in things outside of the classroom. It makes you realize that our teachers can be interesting. Currently, Mr King is beating Mr Hashinsky by a decent amount this season. But, the football season has also just started, so this won’t be the last time that the two go head-to-head about fantasy football.
