Cardozo students are all unique individuals with their own wants, needs, and inspirations and Kaylyn Huertas isn’t an exception.
As a rising senior and the winning candidate for Tri-M Fundraising Committee Head, she has big aspirations for her last year of high school.
Huertas has a strong passion for music and participates in chorus, a capella, Tri-M, and Arista. Students have probably seen her sing before at the winter concert, the multicultural show, and the singing group who sang beautiful songs for Valentine Day throughout the building.
Along with her singing talents, she also has a gift for playing guitar. Huertas elaborated, “My dad got me into music, teaching me the guitar when I was in third grade, and then I started listening to different songs and genres and eventually wanted to play along.”
“I learned how to play the guitar and ukulele,” she added.
Huertas ran to become the head of Tri-M’s fundraising committee because her mission was to help promote specific events for Tri-M members, sharing, “I wanted to be the head of Tri-M’s fundraising committee because I enjoy building community and maintaining relationships. I also wanted to plan fun events for our members.”
She continued, “For Tri-M, I intend to coordinate additional events and fundraisers to collect funds for the program. I also intend to improve communication among committees to make event planning much easier.”
Aside from her musical abilities, Huertas hopes to pursue a lucrative career that allows her to help others. She came to Cardozo for the biomedical program.
“When I first came to Dozo, I thought the school was nice — especially since they played songs during passing, and the freshman teachers were welcoming,” she reflected.
Huertas’ immense dedication and commitment to school and service even earned her the 2023-2024 intergenerational service award through the Glamour Girls Club.
She also believes that her friendships have helped shape her into the person she is today, saying, “Definitely, my friends and family have shaped my personality. For example, I believe I’m more outgoing and extroverted than I was before because of my friends who just bring a lot of energy and life into my day.”
On top of music and Biomed, Huertas is also a part of the girls’ fencing team at Cardozo. She’s a proud foil player who joined fencing because of a K-drama.
“I joined fencing because of a K-drama I watched, Twenty-Five Twenty-One. I thought the sport looked really cool and interesting, and then I saw posters on the walls advertising the girls fencing tryouts 2023-2024 and decided to just try out.”
In her own words, she described the fencing team as, “Family, because we all go through the highs and lows of being on a team together—which I believe has strengthened our friendships.”
Huertas is looking forward to her final year as a proud Biomed student, and she has formally taken over as head of the fundraising committee of Tri-M.
“I want to say thank you so much for your support, and I will work hard to ensure various and fun events for Tri-M,” she exclaimed.
