When she was only 11 years old, Yeyeong Chang moved to America from South Korea with her family. Now, six years later, she is headed to Boston University to study health science.
She had several impressive extracurriculars during the past few years at Cardozo High School. After joining Model UN in her sophomore year, she ran for secretary. Chang has since held this position for the past two years, attending conferences with the club each year.
This year she participated in the GCMUN conference, where she won an honorable mention for her hard work throughout the conference. For those who know her from the club, she was a guiding figure throughout the conference, known for her helpful nature and sweet smile. Chang described, “Going to the conferences was a great memory where [her] public speaking skills and confidence were able to grow.”
As a member of Cardozo’s Honor Society, Arista, Chang has served as the secretary for the society for the current school year. Her responsibilities include assisting with events, keeping track of the point system for Arista members and more.
Chang also joined the girls varsity table tennis team in her junior year and continued on the team in her senior year. This past season the team advanced to the quarter finals.
In addition to these commitments in school, Chang works at a Korean school as a teacher, helping teach pre-k students Korean, which she is fluent in. She originally started as a volunteer teaching assistant before she “ got an offer as a teacher.” Although the rowdy children are a handful, Chang says she “wouldn’t trade [her] students for anything. I’m gonna miss them so much when I go to college.”
Chang is currently taking AP Calc BC and AP Macroeconomics, finding it beneficial to “challenge” herself in these strenuous courses. Although she was worried about the classes at first, they quickly became two of her favorite subjects.
The senior has big plans for the future. Chang applied to Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences through early decision and was accepted. Chang explained that her major is health science and she definitely wants to study the medical field. “Right now I’m considering going to medical school,” she added.
Chang had been interested in art for years, originally intending to pursue illustration. However, during her junior year her focus shifted to medicine. Originally, Chang had no plans to pursue medicine, although she was “Always interested in science.” She said, “[her] summer internship at optometrist’s office definitely helped [her] shape [her] future as a medical professional.”
She looks forward to retiring after a successful career and hopefully traveling the world. For her, this means “having a peaceful life after retirement. [She wants] to continue to draw, read, watch movies, crochet, knit, and help others if possible.”
Some of her favorite memories from high school were being with her friends and having silly conversations. It makes her feel so much better whenever she feels down.
As she leaves Cardozo after four long years, she reflected on how, “Things [she] thought were big things were actually nothing. So don’t worry. Also don’t hesitate to do anything.”
