Melania Avedian is junior at Cardozo with an emerging talent for art. Thankfully for Avedian, Cardozo has a wonderful art program where artists have the creative liberty to explore their work.
You probably recognized Avedian’s art in the hallways, like the memorial of Ms. Rohan earlier this year. As a member of Gateway, Melania was assigned to make a memorial for the late passing of Ms. Rohan. Which was a new scale for Melania, as they explained that “I’ve always tried to learn different mediums, and I think versatility is important with art, which is one of the reasons why the Ms. Rohan mural was a little challenging because I’ve never painted something that scale before.
When asked when they got the desire to sketch, Avedian replied, “I think I started doing ‘art,’ basically drawing, since I learned what it was. I remember when I was younger always showing off the things I’d draw to friends and my parents, and my mom would always save everything I drew even if I hated it, and I’m grateful she did because it’s cool for me to see the progression from when I was super young to now.”
Looking towards their future, art as a career requires a great deal of attention and time. Not all talented artists are as successful in drawing as Leonardo Da Vinci or Rembrandt, and with the rise of AI, it could potentially replace the ability to create something on your own. However, Avedian has their eyes set on their future.

“Art is definitely something I want to pursue as a career, the dream is character design or animation,” they explained.
“But, I know that the field, especially now, would be kind of difficult with AI and all of that nonsense. I’m staying optimistic though, I’m confident enough in my abilities to try and achieve what I want in the fields I’m interested in.”
Avedian’s words of advice for upcoming artists are, “To not worry about other people’s progress or their skills. Everyone is different, and there’s value in just learning one new thing even if you think you’re not at the skill level you want to reach yet. I’ve been drawing and doing art a long time, and I can say it took me years to acquire different skills.”
They also explained to not give up or feel imposter syndrome. “Anyone who feels discouraged because they’re ‘not good enough at art’ shouldn’t because art isn’t something you’re just suddenly good at, it takes a lot of practice and commitment to learn different skills, like anything else,” Avedian explained.
As the world evolves in an evolving land of art. It’s important to overcome the rise of AI and pursue your true career. If it’s drawing or anything else that suits you. Keep creating and explore your passion. It’s all about perspective and experience that makes a person a better artist.
