As we celebrate Women’s History Month, Principal Meagan Colby believes that women’s achievements, accomplishments, and contributions should be honored year-round.
Principal Colby knows how busy life can get, but sees these celebrations as a time to pause, reflect on how far we’ve come, and recognize the work still needed, especially when it comes to issues like pay gaps. “We should never be satisfied with where we are. We must keep pushing forward,” she said.
Principal Colby’s journey into education began after college, but unexpectedly. She didn’t initially plan on becoming a teacher, however, challenges led her to return home, where her high school principal — aware of her background in science — offered her a job teaching at her alma mater. It wasn’t a traditional path, but one Principal Colby is grateful she took.
As a woman in a male-dominated field, Principal Colby faced numerous challenges, but believes that women must always strive to be the best to earn fair evaluations. She is thankful for the positive role models in her life, especially her mother, who reinvented herself as an educator to support her family. Her mother’s resilience taught Principal Colby that women can achieve anything when they set their minds to it.
Out of the school year, Principal Colby’s favorite day of the year is graduation — when she gets to shake the hands of hundreds of students who’ve worked hard to reach their goals. Despite the challenges of a large school like Cardozo, she cherishes the moment of celebration, knowing each graduate’s journey is unique. “Just keep pushing yourself beyond what you think is your limit,” Colby advised. “We can overcome what we thought was impossible.”
Principal Colby’s story is a powerful testament to dedication, perseverance, and the life-changing impact of education. Through her commitment to empowering students, particularly young women, and by embracing the importance of mentors, Principal Colby’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the transformative power of education.
