Cardozo’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Program had an eventful Veteran’s Day weekend as they were awarded the opportunity to witness history and take part in annual military events.
On Saturday, Nov. 9, Cadets and program directors Major Moore and Chief Chen witnessed the USS John Basilone (DDG 122) as it was commissioned in New York City. The Naval warship is named after Medal of Honor recipient GySgt John Basilone, who remains the only enlisted Marine to be honored with both the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor.
On Monday, Nov. 11, over 100 of Cardozo’s NJROTC cadets and marching band members participated in the 105th annual New York City Veterans Day Parade. This year’s Grand Marshal was Medal of Honor recipient SGT Dakota Meyer, USMC(Ret.). In attendance were various JROTC programs and youth organizations from the tri-state area. This was the second year that Cardozo’s NJROTC and marching band participated in this event to honor all those that served.
