Carrying a giant bag with its strap slung over her shoulder, her free hand holding a much-needed coffee, social studies teacher and technology coordinator, Mrs. Sita, roams the halls, taking the most efficient routes to make sure she makes it to her next class on time.
This, however, was not the life her 20-year-old self would’ve expected to live. Ever since she was younger, Mrs. Sita had wanted to be a brain surgeon. Expecting to be in the operating room when she was still in college, Mrs. Sita had mysteriously found herself on a completely different path: teaching. You might be thinking: why teaching?
We were curious too, and decided to get answers. When asked why she decided to become a teacher, Mrs. Sita said, “I wanted to help educate the new generation and spread my knowledge to other people.”
Mrs. Sita clearly cares about making sure that the information she teaches in class gets to her students. She explained that she makes a point to let her students know that she’s available for help whenever they need it, even when she has her own children to care for. “I answer emails and Remind messages in the middle of the night,” she stated. “I really have an open door policy for my students. I wish I had more time with my students to make sure they really understand the material.”
In fact, when it comes to her twin sons, both of whom are taking AP History courses themselves, and their understanding of the material she teaches, she pushes them even harder to make sure that they’d be able to do their best. This is no different than when it comes to the students she sees every day at Cardozo.
“I teach an AP class, so I’m hard on them, but in hopes that they’d be better students, learners, and people.” When it comes to teaching, it’s very obvious that she’s passionate about her students not just passing the course, but truly taking in and understanding the material.
When it comes to what advice she has for her students, Mrs. Sita wanted to leave them with one thing to remember: “Work hard and focus on school but also make sure you have fun and get involved. You’ll figure your life out as you go along.”
