Mental health is considered a major part of a person’s overall health. There are five areas of health that are important: mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual health. In order to be able to manage the other areas, a person’s mental health has to be good because it affects the way people think, feel, and behave. It highly defines the way one responds to stress, relates to others, and makes choices. The improvement of one’s mental health is a factor that needs to be taken into consideration no matter what they are doing in life. In fact, good mental health forms the very foundation of our ability to function effectively in the world. It enables us to reason, make the right conclusions, and establish social relationships.
Mental health has a huge effect on how we feel in one’s everyday life. Having good mental health allows a person to have good self-esteem and confidence allowing them to be happy and more satisfied with life. It helps one free their mind as it impacts their thoughts, behavior, and emotions.
If one’s mental health is good, they are most likely to perform more productively in all aspects of life, ranging from their professional life to social life.
On the other hand, negative factors, which include poor mental health, affect productivity and manage to affect the way people maintain healthy relationships. Mental health issues thus prove detrimental because of the way they affect not only the individual but the family, community, and society in a huge way.
Research states, “About one in 25 U.S. adults lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.” However, the good news is that there are plenty of ways to promote and support one’s well-being.
Staying physically active is one thing that always benefits our body and at the same time can improve our mood and we can find ways of coping with stress. For example, going to the gym or going on a run every time you feel down.
Caring for friendships and getting help from family members or friends during vulnerable moments helps people feel grounded and make dealing with feelings and emotions easier. Besides getting quality sleep, having a balanced diet, utilizing mindfulness techniques such as meditation, mental toughness can also be improved.
When having conflict with major difficulties, having to address them with therapists or counselors can be of great help when looking for ways on how to deal with such situations and crises.
In conclusion, mental health is not just a state where a person does not suffer from any mental disorder, but it is the ability to enjoy life, to achieve one’s goals, to relate comfortably with others, and to be self-satisfied.
It has a big effect in people’s way of thinking, feeling, and behaving and in our interactions with other people. By engaging in daily self-care, including exercise, one-on-one communications, stress-reducing activities such as meditation, and possibly seeking professional help, we are able to best face and overcome such adversities.
To the same extent that people pay attention to their physical health, the same attention should be given to their mental health.
