As the back-to-school season is kicking off, everyone is working through their own struggles of getting back to the swing of things. Getting to know the hallways and finding your classes with a new schedule, worrying about having classes with your friends, and of course, finding your counselor to fix your schedules.
Alongside the common issues that every student and teacher faces this time of year, one that most people are dealing with at Cardozo are the state of the hallways during passing time.
Getting to class on time is a crucial part of everyone’s day to day routine and that becomes a difficult task, because of dreaded hallway traffic. What makes it even more difficult is when a teacher marks you late to class despite being stuck in said hallway traffic or coming from the Annex back to the main building.
This leads to many students feeling that teachers should give an extra few minutes of grace time — especially to the kids who have to transfer from building to building.
Kaylyn Ulysse, a Cardozo senior, feels strongly about teachers giving an extra few minutes to get to class. “I think 100 percent because sometimes, I’m coming from the annex to the third floor,” she said. “I still need those extra few minutes because the stairs are always packed.”
Ulysse isn’t the only one that feels this way, many other students do as well. Myan Hutchinson, a Cardozo junior, discussed how the traffic in the hallways affects her personally to get to class.
“People in the hallways that don’t walk pisses me off on another level they either stand there, exchange a hug or walk slowly,” Hutchinson explained.
When asked if teachers should give extra time to get to class Hutchinson also added, “Absolutely because they know how it feels too and also because I know they complain with the other teachers and their friends,” she said.
Along with students, teachers and staff also echo the feelings about crowded hallways. They have obligations and things to do and need to get around the building as well.
Ms. Eshaghian, an English teacher and dean at Cardozo, had a lot to say about the matter of hallway traffic.
“I give a little bit of grace but you still have to be here, but we extended the amount of time that kids can go between classes,” she explained. “It used to be three minutes but now it’s about four or five minutes so there is an extra minute.”
Despite the extra minute, many students still struggle to get the classes on time. Madison Boodoo, a Cardozo senior, claimed, “As a Senior I want to get to all my classes on time since this is my last year. I want to make a great effort.”
“I feel, in the beginning of the year they should give us more time to get classes and as the year goes they can make the time back to five minutes,” Boodoo added.
Jaidon Sims, a Cardozo junior, however, had some tips for those still struggling to get to class on time.
“Just always walk on the side that your direction is going, don’t start walking backwards with other people that way everyone all walk forward easily,” he said.
Overall hallway traffic is definitely a burden to everyone’s day to day routine to getting to class and being on time.
Although Cardozo is full of many students, there are ways that teachers and students can help to make it less stressful. This includes teachers giving just an extra few minutes to get to class and students moving along their way instead of standing around during passing.
