The month of May brings forth the true beginning of springtime and the beginning of many other things. It’s a time to try new things and experience the outdoors. One thing that many also acknowledge in May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Starting in 1992, the month of May was named Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month by President George H. W. Bush and Congress. This celebration takes place throughout the entire month of May. Jeanie Jew is credited with the idea, as she was disappointed with the lack of representation for AAPI in the United States and wanted to be celebrated.
The reason why the month of May was chosen to celebrate AAPI is because it marks the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Therefore, it recognizes the hardworking Chinese immigrants who worked on the project.
During this month, people all over celebrate the importance of Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians and their role in American history. Everyone can use this month to honor their accomplishments in our world.
This month should be used as a time of educating ourselves in the contributions AAPI have made to our societies and the everyday people that we should honor because of this month.
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at times left out of U.S. history, but their work and lives are transfused in our shared history, as they’re the reason for many brilliant events in our history. Through literature, art, advocation, media, and social studies, AAPI have transformed and created new perspectives in this area
In the month of May, take the time to understand the many contributions they’ve made to our societies. Read a book, look at famous art pieces, learn about the extensive history of AAPIs, and open yourself up to become more knowledgeable about the group of people we are celebrating during this flowering month!
