At Cardozo High School, many students take Spanish as their foreign language course. Learning a new language can be hard, but with having a teacher like Ms. Ramirez, your experience can be fun.
Ms. Ramirez started teaching Spanish 1 in 2022. She made learning a foreign language fun and interesting because she has a great personality. She is always happy and ready to teach her kids which makes her students feel happy. She is a teacher that most students never forget.
Ms. Ramirez shared that she didn’t get into teaching straight away. She actually was in politics first.
“I started right out of college. I had an internship working on Hillary Clinton’s campaign in Pennsylvania,” Ms. Ramirez shared.
“After that internship ended I went to a Democratic Fundraiser in Queens where I am from because one of my biggest skills is talking. I was able to network that into a position to work for the New York State Senator Toby Stavisky in Flushing.”
When asked how she got into teaching, she shared, “I am a Spanish teacher at Cardozo mostly because when I was in the State Senate, some of my biggest responsibilities were reaching out to the Spanish population.”
“I had to do a lot of outreach, translating important changes that were happening. So it was kind of seamless and for me Spanish speaking became less of a tool and more of a passion,” she explained.
“As soon as I saw that my words made an impact when I was able to speak to people in my language. Then I had lots of students that volunteered for lots of campaigns and I loved managing students so that became a transition into education for me.”
What Ms. Ramirez wants her students to learn when teaching is, “the culture and the language.”
“I want them to see Latino people as people who are driven, who come from really interesting cultural legacies. I want to just perceive all things Spanish speaking as interesting, worthwhile, and worth knowing,” she further explained.
When asked where she sees herself in the future she said, “I think I’m going to go back into politics eventually because I kind of miss the rush of energy in the election cycle but for now I really enjoy teaching, being with the students, and the whole process.”
