The Cardozo High School Boys Volleyball team took home a win for a scrimmage against several different high schools in New York City. Dozo went up against Richmond Hill, Hunter, and Bronx Science. Though the other schools had good teams, Cardozo was able to take the win.
The win was not due just to the team’s hard work. “Our Coach gives really good advice, I feel like we should listen to him more than we do,” Leo, a Volleyball player expressed.
Joseph Jeon, another player, said, “Coach Scarrola is a great coach. Whenever the team is down, he’s always there. He gives very good advice so that we can get good motivation and keep our momentum as a team.”
Greatness starts from somewhere and for player Koa, his steps into volleyball came from Haikyuu, a popular volleyball anime. “I got into volleyball because of an anime, I’m not going to lie, it was Haikyuu. I tried out freshman year and school saw potential so that’s how I got on,” Koa stated.
For Stephen however, The Olympics are what influenced him. “During Covid, I was watching the Olympics and then I saw men’s volleyball for the first time,” Stephen said. “It was really interesting. I’ve only ever known that volleyball was for girls, and then I watched men’s volleyball and I saw how they hit really hard and that was really impressive to me.”
Being a student athlete can be fun, but sometimes can be challenging. So how does the boys volleyball team motivate themselves? “The community and friends I built along the way and how the sport keeps pushing myself to do new things, the sport is constantly evolving and you can’t stop to keep up,” player Justin Lau proclaimed.
Player Stephen Suh expressed, “I always aspire to be the best, the desire for greatness. I want to win everything I can, winning is so addicting.”
“Seeing all the better competition and knowing that there’s always something to improve on pushes me to keep on playing and doing more,” shared another player, Haron.
Coach Scarrola, the volleyball coach for both boys and girls volleyball at Cardozo, is confident in his team, and believes that this strong team will make it to championships. “I’m very happy to get started, we have a lot of returning players this year. Which will help with experience, we have new editions that have a lot of promise,” he said.
“We have guys who can hit, guys who can run a lot of plays. So right now we’re hoping to put it all together.” He believes his team has great chemistry and is all talented student-athletes. “I like how they play, I like how they do have fun together as a team,” Coach Scarrola explained.
“That’s an important part of it, a good chemistry with them. Now with the club players, we are trying to get them to all gel together as one team instead of just being a bunch of club members.”
He also believes this team can make it all the way this year. “I think we can make a deep run if we work hard enough. I can see us to the end. I’m very confident in their abilities, but they have to learn to be humble and realize that we have a lot of work to do before we get to the next level, we need to continue being better and better.”
