It’s March, and not only is St Patrick’s Day around the corner, but March is also National Caffeine Awareness Month. Let’s take a dive into the world of caffeine.
Caffeinated beverages such as coffee, Coca-Cola, and Monster Energy drinks all have high caffeine amounts. It’s important to know and control the amount of caffeine we consume.
According to Michigan Medicine, “Adolescents ages 12 to 18 should cap daily caffeine intake at 100 mg (the equivalent of about one cup of coffee, one to two cups of tea, or two to three cans of soda). For children under 12, there’s no designated safe threshold.” Adults should be intaking 400 milligrams of caffeine a day to not surpass the limit of caffeine intake.
Everyone loves a good cup of coffee, and that love for coffee surged even before the Civil War. As battlefield.org expresses, “Coffee, a staple before the Civil War in most households, became a luxury, and a beverage soldiers craved. It was what bolstered them and also refueled them, increasing morale, providing comfort before a battle, and giving soldiers fortitude to continue a march.”
With this month being National Caffeine Awareness Month, not only should we check our caffeine intake but focus on cutting it down, too. Every day we should make sure we’re drinking the right amount of caffeine to stay healthy and safe from overconsumption.
