High school students across New York are currently in the testing phases. Over the past week, students have been taking final exams, New York State Regents Exams, and for the first time, Mock Regents Exams at Cardozo High School. Any exam can be stressful, but when students are taking multiple exams back-to-back, it can be chaotic and challenging. That’s why it’s important, more than ever, for students to find ways to relax and wind down.
As it is extremely important to study prior to any exam, you never want to burn yourself out and have it impact your mental health. A really simple way to relax that’s loved by all is by listening to music. No matter what genre or artists you enjoy, unwinding with a song can be soothing. You can even have it playing in the background while you study, if it’s not a personal distraction. If you’re unsure what music to start with, you can even check out the Spotify playlists on our website.
Another effective way of relaxing beforehand is a change of scenery. Most people are usually always in the same setting the majority of their time, so going outside, or even just a different room, can help. This switches things up and can make one feel like they’re in a whole different environment with positive energy.
Finally, it is recommended to spend time with loved ones. Talk to someone about how you’re feeling and as basic as it is, the people around you will give a sense of warm fuzzy love. Whether it’s family or friends, teachers or acquaintances, when you find someone you’re comfortable enough with, it’ll all come naturally. Sometimes, all you need is a distraction to relax your body and your mind.
After you’ve taken the exam, most of the weight will feel as it has lifted off your shoulders. But, everyone knows very well that the overwhelming thoughts of how you did, or overthinking everything that was on it, can be harmful.
Right after your exam, go out and spend some time with your friends. It’s healthy to be supported by those who have been through the same processes. Even if you feel that you can’t talk to family, venting to friends can be helpful because they also understand what you are going through firsthand.
Another personal favorite of mine to relax afterward is sleeping. Naps allow the obsessive thoughts to quiet for a while and when you wake up, you’re fresh and ready to take on the rest of your day.
