On Dec. 6, the girls varsity basketball team won their first game against Campus Magnet, with a score of 48-19 in the 4th quarter.
From the start, the girls were fired up and were fully prepared to win, guided by Coach Peponakis, the team’s head coach. Coach Peponakis was well-known for coaching the JV boys basketball team, and is now coaching the girls varsity basketball team this year.
“It’s my first year, a lot of girls don’t know me, and I don’t know them so we’re working on getting used to each other. They’re really great kids, they’re nice kids, they work hard, they listen and we just have to put it together,” Coach Peponakis expressed.
Being on a sports team and being in school are two big responsibilities some students have to face. However, how do these students balance both school and sports? Meniia, number 22 on the team stated, “It’s about motivation, once you get your school work done, you can take some stress out on the basketball court.”
Jeeanna, number 2 on the team, expressed, “It’s hard, but I usually do my work when I have free time, like after I finish class work, or I find time outside of school or I’ll do it during my lunch period.”
“I played basketball as a kid, around 6th grade. My brother got me into it, since he always played, and we played on a mini hoop, and eventually I started playing on my own, and I continued to love the sport,” she continued.
