December has officially started and with Christmas around the corner, Christmas shopping isn’t the only trend on the internet. Dec. 3 is also a big day and it all started with one man: Conan Gray.
In 2020, Conan Gray released his song “Heather,” the strip of lyrics that stuck with listeners was, “I still remember the third of December, me in your sweater. You said it looked better on me than it did you.” Due to this part of the song, The Dec. 3 trend was born and grew ever more popular. This trend is about someone giving their sweater to their loved one. This act is about love towards another person. Though the trend is three years old, listeners or fans of Conan Gray still remember this day of love.
Fatima Ali, a Cardozo student mentioned, “I think it’s a really cute trend but sad because I can’t benefit from it. But other than that, I think it’s really cute and a good way to get people out of their comfort zone in talking to their crush and the song is so vibey.” Though Ali hasn’t received a sweater, she shared that she’s comfortable in her own sweater.
“I think it’s a cute trend, normally I’m a hater but when you go from wishing you were Heather to ‘being’ a Heather in a relationship, it’s cute! I love seeing all my friends gift and receive sweaters from their significant others and being happy for them. Also I love Conan Gray and his music so December 3rd being his unofficial day is awesome,” shared another Cardozo student, Ivy.
An anonymous student also expressed, “This trend is a little fun thing to do with your friend or a partner. Some people might not like it because they don’t have that someone to get a sweater from.”
“In my opinion, I believe that this trend is a creative way to confront your crush. Most people are afraid to socialize with their crush and this is a great way to overcome fears and see what they think about you,” admitted another Cardozo student, Santino.”
One student, Jasmin, finally received a sweater this year. “I felt really happy to have gotten it because it’s the first time anyone’s really given me a gift with this type of meaning! It’s also really comfortable!” One Cardozo senior, Blanca, shared, “I remember it from last year on Dec. 3 everyone was posting their crushes/partners and I was so jelly because of it.”
Though on Dec. 29 that’s when I finally got my hoodie,” she said, with a grin on her face.
By giving a sweater on Dec. 3 you’re showing love to another person, however, there are some people who are afraid to talk to their crush at all.
“I think if you do follow up on this, you have great self-confidence, because me personally, I would never. I would be too ashamed, what if they don’t like me back? The only good thing is if you know they like you too, because you’re really playing with fire,” student Michael Ram said.
Overall Dec. 3 holds a special place for Conan Gray enthusiasts, especially those who resonate with the song “Heather.” While some students might miss out on receiving sweaters, it’s crucial to understand that love isn’t confined to specific dates like Dec. 3 or Feb. 14; it is everywhere in every moment of our lives.
Even the smallest gestures be meaningful for someone. Expressing love may be challenging for some students, but it’s crucial to cherish moments with that crush. Take the leap, whether it’s asking them out or simply spending time together sometimes, the first move means everything. Embrace the countless opportunities to connect, as love can unfold unexpectedly on any given day.
