As Halloween comes to an end, everyone immediately begins talking about Christmas and Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a national holiday that is celebrated with friends and family, enjoying food and giving thanks to everything and everyone who is in our lives. When asked, most people can come up with things that they are thankful for. But, what is it that the students and staff of Cardozo are thankful for?
Some are thankful for life. “I am grateful to be here today, I almost fell off my skateboard,” shared one anonymous student. “I came so close to death that it made me really appreciate being here.” Others, however, are thankful for their loved ones. “This year I am thankful for family and friends, without them I wouldn’t be here,” another student expressed.
“I’m grateful for my friend group, and my dog,” student Elizabeth admitted. “My friend group motivates me to come to school everyday and my dog is always with me. She seems to understand me and she knows how I feel.”
While friends and family are important to some students, others find their hobbies and interests of great importance. “I’m thankful for friends, family, food, plushies, and anime,” senior Violetta stated. “In my life, my friends make my life more fun and I enjoy their company. I’m also grateful to have grown up in a nice environment with my family and they’ve done a lot for me.”
Family also was at the forefront of many student’s thanks. “I’m thankful for my family they’re always there for me and are always helping me with anything I need,” an anonymous student added. “Always helping me through stuff, if I’m going through something they’ve always been there for me and taking care of me.”
Dean and English teacher Ms. Eshaghian echoed these words of gratitude for family, sharing, “I am thankful that I have two, healthy, wonderful, well-adjusted, lovely children who are doing what they should be doing, and I am happy about that. She shared that she is very proud of everything they’ve done, despite how hard it can be to raise children.
Librarian Mrs. M gave thanks for her children’s newfound independence. “I’m thankful that my children learned to make their beds themselves, it helps them become more independent and it takes off the stress as a mom.”
Finally, guidance counselor Mrs. Saponara shared, “I am thankful for my family, for my growing family.” In celebration, Mrs. Saponara shared her son is getting married. “My future daughter-in-law is a beautiful person and has integrated very well into my family. My biggest thanks is that we can still be a big happy family,” she expressed.
With the holidays coming up and everyone getting ready for their Thanksgiving dinner, it can be hard to remember the true meaning of the day. However, the true meaning of Thanksgiving is to spend time with family with laughs on the table as we share beautiful moments together. Everyday should be Thanksgiving, as everyday we should be grateful for something—even a simple thing such as waking up in the morning is something to be grateful for.
